| SECTIONS | Under 1800 (1500 to 1799) and 1800 and above. Your section is set by the higher of your verified USCF regular and FIDE standard ratings. No playing up, no playing down. If fewer than six players enter a section, the sections merge into a single Open for that edition. |
| ELIGIBILITY | Rated 1500 or higher (USCF or FIDE), verified at registration. Current USCF membership required through September 29; you can add or renew it during registration. FIDE membership is not required. |
| TROPHIES | First place in each section, donated by Chess Cardinals Club, awarded on the first Tuesday of the following month. Minimum three games actually played to qualify. |
| BYES | Any Tuesday you do not select scores a half point. You can also request one later, up to 15 minutes before the round starts. No limit, and no player is removed for missing a night. Once pairings are posted, a paired no-show forfeits and the opponent receives the full point. |
Going to miss a round? Tell us in advance through your personal check-in link, at utuadochessclub@gmail.com, or by phone at 417-251-5157. No-shows leave your paired opponent without a game; timely notice keeps the tournament fair for everyone.
Boards, pieces and clocks are provided. No minimum age. Minors are welcome; a parent or guardian on site is preferred but not required.

The St. Louis area has a thriving rated chess scene, with great weeknight events across the metro, including the Monday Gambits and Thursday Grand Prix right here at Chess Cardinals. The Tuesday Classical adds one more option to that calendar: a classical night, where each player gets a full hour plus a thirty second increment, one game is the whole evening, and a month of Tuesdays builds into a complete tournament. It is the format used by the longest-running weekly events in the country, and now it has a home in Chesterfield.
One game a night, roughly ninety minutes of thinking time each once the increment is counted, and a full month to build a result. There is room to calculate long variations, to settle into a deep middlegame plan, to walk the room between moves, and to go home with a game worth studying. If you enjoy preparation, endgame technique, and the long slow build of a strategic squeeze, this night was made for you.
Who this is for
This is a USCF rated chess tournament in St. Louis for players rated 1500 and above, with rating sections so that every game is played between well-matched opponents. Adults returning to competitive play, juniors ready for adult competition, and titled and expert players who want serious opposition on a weeknight will all find a game here. Players rated 2100 and above enter free, because a strong top board makes the whole room better. As the field grows, sections split further so the matchups stay close at every level.
Built for people with jobs
The entry structure exists because real life interferes with chess. You choose the Tuesdays you can commit to and you pay for those alone, ten dollars each, capped at thirty for the entire edition. Any Tuesday you skip is worth half a point rather than a zero, so a work trip or a sick child does not end your month. Nobody is dropped from the standings, and nobody has to decide in advance whether they can promise five straight weeks.
About the club
The Utuado Chess Club is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit founded in the mountains of Utuado, Puerto Rico. It runs FIDE rated events on the island, including the Copa Gambito del Otoao, and the Utuado Chess Club Tuesday Classical is its first series on the mainland, making it the first Puerto Rican club to organize rated chess in both places.
